Rhinoplasty, commonly called a nose job or nose reshaping, is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the country. With rhinoplasty, cosmetic surgeons can reshape the nose, remove bumps, correct asymmetry and refine the tip.

If you are considering this surgery, the first step would be to talk to a plastic surgeon to be sure that you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty. In general, the best candidates are at least 18 years old (although, in some cases, surgeons will agree to perform the procedure on younger patients, in good health and are not satisfied with their nose. It is also important to have realistic expectations about what the surgery can provide.

To prepare for surgery, patients will be asked to quit smoking several weeks before the procedure. Also, it will be expected that the patient not consume any alcohol for one week prior to surgery. You may need to discontinue certain medications and may be asked to take other medications.

While some surgeons may suggest that you bring photos of noses that appeal to you, it is important to remember that not every nose will look right on every face. For this reason, you should heed the advice of your surgeon if he says that a certain look is not right for you. The goal is not to have a certain nose transplanted onto your face. Instead, the aim of rhinoplasty is to correct imperfections in your nose in the most aesthetically pleasing way possible.

Usually, rhinoplasty will require general anesthesia. In some cases, you may only need a local anesthesia along with a sedative. During this cosmetic surgery, incisions will be made either to the interior or exterior of your nose. The surgeon will then perform the corrective procedures that had been discussed prior. The procedure takes between two and four hours, depending on the type of rhinoplasty and other factors.

There are scars, but they are well hidden. Some risks associated with rhinoplasty include infection, excessive bleeding and complications with anesthesia. After surgery, there will be pain, bruising and swelling. For most patients, the pain subsides after two or three days and the bruising with a week. Most swelling is gone after about a month, but it may take up to a full year for all of the swelling to subside and for full results to be visible.
